About Calcium Batteries? With a little work, the abundant metal could replace lithium in modern batteries. Batteries of an e-car are shown to the customers on the ExpoZHANG PENGGETTY IMAGES Lithium ion batteries are common today, but for a number of environmental and economic reasons, scientists are looking for the next big battery. Calcium has potential in a number of areas, but struggles in finding a way to move electricity through an electrolyte. It's not perfect yet, but scientists have created the best electrolyte to date. A recently synthesized chemical offers the promise of an entirely new type of battery: calcium-based, as opposed to the modern batteries that rely on lithium. Across the globe, scientists are interested in what's coming after lithium batteries. The rechargeable batteries have become the dominant power source in any number of consumer electronics, from phones to cars. Research predicts that the global lithium ion battery market will be w...

Looks Like We Have a New State of Matter It's called topological superconductivity, and it could be great for improving computer memory. A team of physicists from New York University, University of Buffalo, and Wayne State University have discovered a new state of matter, which they say has the potential to increase storage capabilities in electronic devices. "Our research has succeeded in revealing experimental evidence for a new state of matter—topological superconductivity," says Javad Shabani, an assistant professor of physics at NYU, in a press statement. "This new topological state can be manipulated in ways that could both speed calculation in quantum computing and boost storage." Thediscovery is not yet in an academic journal, but has been published in   arXiv , which hosts preprints approved for posting after moderation without full peer review. Titled "Phase signature of topological transition in Josephson Junctions,"...
